A Pontifical Council for Culture ASCO Volunteer, Karin von Arx from Switzerland visits Saint Thomas Aquinas chaplaincy [STACC] of the Federal University of Science and Technology Owerri (FUTO)on the 26th day of January at the 7 o’clock Mass to inform and educate the student on what the Assumpta Science Center Ofekata Owerri (ASCO) International Initiative promoted by the Vatican Pontifical Council for Culture is all about. Karin had originally billed to participate at the ASCO 2019 Christmas Science Lectures on 28th December, during her ASCO Mission.
She was accompanied on the visit by ASCO Members and Volunteers in Owerri including Eze Delos, Mbata Chinwendu, Ezenwoba Mary Cynthia and Peter Chukwudi and the visitor herself Karin von Arx. During the Mass, that is at the ending part of the Mass, the Chaplain – Parish Priest of the Chaplaincy – Rev. Father Jude Ike shared a little history of the ASCO International Initiative with the students and later handed over the microphone to the Acting ASCO Co-ordinator in the person of Eze Delox who told the students that ASCO is a Non-Governmental Organization under the Vatican Pontifical Council for Culture in Rome, Italy. It’s an organization mainly for students and young minds to help them more in their challenges about science. The microphone was later passed to Karin who said “ASCO is a voluntary organization aimed at educating the students. I am one of the volunteer from Switzerland and I urge each and every one of you to be part of this organization because it is in your country, work hard and support this organization through your ideas and suggestions”.
After talking to the students inside the church, one of the teachers from Ihiagwa secondary school met with one of the science explainers and asked why the organization have not visit their school and was told that the organization will plan for it. Most of the students also told the explainers they would love to join and their contacts were gathered for easy communication. They were also told to always visit the center on daily basis and also come for the Saturday training/ meeting.
